The Notebook.

Short, written reflections. Posted from the pulpit's edge between Sunday and Monday — a few pastoral paragraphs on what last week's text is still asking of us this week.

Issue 12 · 26.05.26 Notebook · The Calling

On hearing yourself say the word "profession" aloud.

Sometimes the diagnostic is small. You catch yourself describing the work as a profession — and you notice the moment the language flattens. A profession is a shape. A calling is a posture. The difference does not always show up on a Sunday. It shows up at 11pm on a Tuesday, when you are tired, when no one is watching, and the next email is asking you for one more honest thing.

Issue 11 · 19.05.26 Notebook · People & Leadership

The conditions under which people flourish.

A note from a leadership intensive last weekend: the CIPD framework is not a substitute for pastoral care, and pastoral care is not a substitute for the framework. Both are servants of the same conviction — that the people in our teams are not assets to be optimised but souls to be tended. The work we are doing is the same work.

Issue 10 · 12.05.26 Notebook · A Generation, Right Now

"Right now" is a complete sentence.

We say young people are the future of the church and we mean it kindly. But the sentence undoes itself. They are the church, right now. Their joy is ours, their grief is ours, their stewardship is ours, their voice in the room is ours. There is no waiting room for the Spirit.

Issue 09 · 05.05.26 Notebook · Sent Out

The church in the streets, the streets in the church.

A small story about a Tuesday morning food run in Milton Keynes, and the woman who asked if we were "the kind of church that just asks for money or the kind that turns up." The line stayed with me. The question stayed with me.
